The world is waking up, and I feel a pull towards life, offering everything and promising even more. I feel the need to shake off the dust and cobwebs in my body, collected from the indeterminate amount of time I’ve spent in this hibernation. These are the richest seasons of life in all of its grand chaos and I have to catch up.

June bridges Gemini and Cancer Season—the former being the sign that rules close relationships and communication, and the latter ruling emotional nurturance as well as the boundary between the self and others. The planets underscore this theme through their positions in the sky this month. All the heavenly bodies are moving in pairs, except for Pluto in Aquarius (and the Moon, which moves the quickest through the zodiac). The resulting energy serves as a reminder that we do not move through this world alone and we don’t achieve anything by ourselves either.

The Willful Plot, curated by Melanie O’Brian at the Belkin Art Gallery, explores how cultural narratives of wilderness and civilization propagate in the site of the garden. Critical queer theorist Sara Ahmed’s articulation of willfulness as a form of anti-authoritarian resistance is at the root of O’Brian’s curation: to be self-willed rather than being full of will, of someone else’s will. Yet the tensions that germinate in the garden—between private and public, cultivation and chaos—occupy the white space of the gallery, too.
