Local Vancouver artist Sára Molčan presents her new series of paintings in exclusive exhibit: Not O.K.(Vancouver, BC-Aug 3rd, 2021)
Contemporary artist Sára Molčan will present her latest series of paintings ‘Not O.K.’ in an exclusive show at the Arts Factory on September 17th, 2021 from 5pm to 10 pm PDT, sponsored by Phillips Brewing and Red Truck Beer Company.
Not O.K. is an 8-piece series of paintings that explores the evolution of relationships through the lens of isolation during the pandemic over the past year and a half. Not O.K. tackles feelings long believed to be buried, the millennial realization that it’s okay to not be okay and that the whole generation probably needs therapy.
In typical Sára Molčan fashion, these larger-than-life selfies will be activated with AR during the exhibit to encourage audience interaction. The new exhibition focuses on how relationships have evolved from the analog romantic comedy meet-cute to a ruthless multiplayer game where the virtual controls more than the real. We swipe right and left to find a match. We melt into our online avatars, swapping identities like phone numbers, each selfie like a mask we put on, a different version of ourselves. Combing through the breadcrumbs left by romantic partners and deciphering emojis like modern hieroglyphics, we seek meaning from the meaningless.Instagram has become the new religion, breeding a culture of comparison.
“My work is representational of my generation’s desire to act in the movie of our own lives,” says Sára. “The world we have constructed has turned tangible experience pale in comparison to the imagined landscape we’ve created for ourselves. The body has become a medium for culture. Culture is the story we spin to ourselves about who we are.” Sára’s work has been featured on the DailyMail, Vancouver is Awesome, BBC, The Today Show, Huffington Post, and New York Magazine, among others as well as exhibitions across Vancouver. Combining her analog paintings with AR digital manipulations, Sára’s works are a calculated and critical performance of self, dictated through the ever-present yearning for likes and comment to fill the emotional void.
Not O.K. will take place at the Arts Factory, 281 Industrial Ave, Vancouver, BC on Sept 17th from 5pm to 10pm PDT. The event will follow all guidelines set by the reopening plan.
