Kealoha

  • Chan Centre for Performing Arts 6265 Crescent Road Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z2 Canada (map)

Kealoha, an Indigenous spoken word artist and Hawaii’s first official poet laureate, will kick off this season’s Beyond Words series at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Oct. 3.  Headlining an evening of slam poetry, Kealoha will explore themes of social consciousness and unity, all while drawing from his scientific background as an MIT graduate.

After earning a degree in nuclear physics, Kealoha worked a series of high-profile corporate jobs in San Francisco before his introduction to slam poetry changed the course of his life and purpose. Returning to his native Hawaii, he founded HawaiiSlam’s First Thursdays — now the largest registered poetry slam in the world. He has been featured on HBO, PBS and NPR, and has performed everywhere from his local schools and libraries to the White House and legendary Green Mill in Chicago.

Kealoha will be joined on stage by local opening acts: Ivan Leonce, mitcholos touchy, Valeen Jules, Anjalica Solomon, and Santiago Urena.

Join the Chan Centre for an epic night of socially conscious poetic performance.
