Cosmic Forecast January 2022
/As we cross the threshold into a new year, the planets start to stack up in Capricorn and make their way into Aquarius. This transition might feel a little shaky, a little unnatural. We move from the limitations and logical organization of material reality into the more conceptual realms of thinking about new possibilities and activating our imaginations.
Capricorn helps us plan and schedule, which is a way of clarifying our boundaries. We’re all capable of designing our own lives by deciding what to include and exclude. Capricorn is like the protective, sometimes strict, parent of the zodiac. It sets curfews and wants you home for dinner. Try not to see this as control but as care. Getting yourself into bed at a reasonable hour and feeding yourself good food are ways of acknowledging your limitations with grace and giving yourself what you need.
On January 2nd, there’s a New Moon in Capricorn opposite Cancer, the sign ruled by the Moon. The Full Moon in Cancer happens on the 17th. This cosmic conversation always comes with a bit of intensity, doubling down on that parental energy. The Moon represents our inner, emotional, and spiritual needs while Capricorn is associated with our outer, physical, and monetary needs. Feelings of lack, grief, and even desperation can come up during this time as these transits highlight where our needs aren’t being met. On the other side of the coin, gratitude—turning your attention towards abundance—can empower you during these lunar phases.
Both Cancer and Capricorn symbolize creatures that move through liminal space: the sea-goat represents both the land and the water, and the crab survives between these two realms in intertidal ecosystems. We’re swimming in this in-between energy with the Sun, Venus, and Pluto in Capricorn for most of the month. This is a great time to challenge black-and-white thinking and embrace complexity, especially regarding your romantic relationships or desires (Venus) and contradictions within your psyche (Pluto). Some things are messy by nature and don’t need to be cleaned up.
Venus is retrograde for the entire month, and Mercury in Aquarius joins the retrograde brigade on the 14th. Once again, communication within your intimate relationships is highlighted. It may be hard for you to see into your own future to understand what you want and where you’re headed. This could make communicating with loved ones difficult if you’re being asked to give a concrete answer about plans you can’t begin to make yet. Avoid making promises and speaking in absolutes. Don’t make excuses, but try to be as open as possible about feeling in-between or indecisive. It’s okay not to have an answer.
Mercury in Aquarius might also feel a little more serious as it’s conjunct Saturn just before it goes retrograde. Saturn, of course, is the planet that rules Capricorn. It’s important to communicate with yourself and others like a wise caretaker. Capricorn and Aquarius together have the energy of a wizened clairvoyant sage who has been through the human experience but has far-reaching sight into the future. It’s an energy that knows all things and sees life’s experiences in the broader context of infinity. Whatever challenges you’re facing, fears and anxieties, small worries, and petty frustrations, try putting on that sage’s cloak. Remember that you, too, are an infinite being made of particles far more ancient than you can imagine. You have the wisdom to see your life’s obstacles as learning opportunities and to go easy on yourself when you don’t measure up to your self-imposed expectations.
The Sun moves into Aquarius on the 19th after a conjunction with Pluto a couple of days before. This conjunction helps us bring deep truths to the surface and finally release or get clarity on any psychological struggles we might have been experiencing. Uranus, the planet of unexpected breakthroughs and limitless potential and ruler of Aquarius, comes out of its five-month retrograde on the 18th. Taken together, these transits push us to another level of awakening to ourselves and our spiritual and interpersonal destinies.
Aquarius is about the future of the collective. Even if you don’t believe in a cosmic purpose for your life, your presence in the context of your community has significant meaning. It’s enough to be loved, and it’s enough to show up. What if the reason you’re here is to give great hugs and to love blackberry jam or to pick up the phone at the right moment, to tell someone you care about exactly what they need to hear? Aquarius season is about acknowledging the transcendent in the ordinary and expanding the way you see your world: being humbled by complexity and contradiction while revelling in the miracle of existing in your unique consciousness.
