Print Editor

SAD Mag (Stories, Art & Design) is a biannual, Vancouver-based publication that features creative work by local, emerging writers and artists. Founded in 2009, SAD Mag has published 34 issues and gained a loyal readership in Vancouver and beyond.

The Print Editor works closely with co-publishers Becca Clarkson and Cynthia Vo Tran, as well as members of the editorial and web team, to produce each issue of the magazine. You will be supported by Sierra Riley as your fellow Print Editor.

Duties & Responsibilities:

● Determining the theme for each issue in partnership with the editorial team, and planning features, interviews, and short pieces

● Recruiting writers and assigning pieces

● Reviewing and responding to submissions and pitches

● Overseeing the contents of the production sheet as assigned by the EIC

● Attending community events to promote the work of SAD Mag

● Working with the Web Editor to coordinate online promotion of issue content

● Editing pieces for style, content, length and grammar

● Providing feedback to writers in a timely and professional fashion

● Working with copy editors

● Attending regular planning and production meetings

Shared responsibilities of all members of the SAD Mag collective:

● Attending magazine events (launches, art/book fairs)

● Cultivating a welcoming, inclusive organization

● Championing the Vancouver arts & culture community

● Participating in regular collective meetings

Requirements:

● Must be based in Vancouver, B.C.

● A full year (2 issues) commitment or longer

● Excellent spelling & grammar

● Familiarity with SAD Mag

● Preferably some experience with print magazines, in a writing or editing capacity

● Knowledge of the Vancouver arts & culture scene

Time Commitment:

As a SAD Mag Print Editor, you can expect to commit a couple of hours weekly to email and in-person issue planning. During production, the time commitment is closer to 6-8 hours a week for 2-4 weeks. The majority of work is on your own schedule, coordinating with the co-publishers as necessary.
