Studio 58 at Langara College presents
Six of One: New Play Festival
Directed by Quelemia Sparrow and Melissa Oei
Live in the theatre March 31–April 8
Vancouver, BC.— Closing out Studio 58’s 56th season (and the first live season since the pandemic) is Six of One: New Play Festival. A celebration of short form plays written by Studio 58 students; Six of One is an opportunity to hear from some of Canada’s newest playwrights. Over two programs, these six snappy new works (plus a bonus one!) reveal fresh ideas and innovative theatre making.
“We’ve had an incredible season back in the theatre and I am thrilled to share Six of One with audiences,” says Artistic Director Courtenay Dobbie. “I love the process of creating new work and being witness to the ingenuity of our students. These plays are timely, sharp, and evidence that the future of Canadian theatre is in good hands!”
PROGRAM A:
Directed by Quelemia Sparrow
Budding by Sarah Conway
Three roommates in their early twenties navigate beginning their careers as artists, the challenges of cohabitation, and sex—obviously. Ever watchful is their sardonic houseplant who is never without an opinion.
Old Man Little Man by Issiah Bull Bear
Little Man traverses the spirit world with the help of Old Man in this unique tale.
Aftermath by Ben Brown
The year is 2030, and Dawn is hosting a dinner party to celebrate the end of a ten-year pandemic-turned-zombie apocalypse. But even though the Zombies are gone, new horrors are realized as the squad tries to “get back to normal.”
Everyone Loves a Mystery by Tristen Foy
Four actors struggle to keep the play together when they discover mid show that the playwright hasn’t completed the script! As the night further unravels, the actors question the meaning and importance of art, why we create, and the absurdity of life in general.
PROGRAM B:
Directed by Melissa Oei
The Banyan Tree by Abigail Padilla & Kevin Nguyen
A love letter to the Asian diaspora, this fantastical play follows a cultural clash between two teenagers, one a refugee and the other a second-generation immigrant. Can being trapped inside a Banyan tree full of mythical creatures guide them towards reconciliation?
Family Christmas by Liam Dignam
In this bizarre political comedy, a young man comes home for the holidays to spend a relaxing week with his family. But thanks to the burgeoning "alternate worldviews" of his younger brother, the family is sent into absolute chaos.
How to F*ck Up a Funeral by Abigail Padilla & Zoë Autumn
This slapstick comedy puts the "fun" in funeral! The dysfunctional Thornton's tackle a series of mishaps and melodrama, discovering how much it takes to deal with crazy family…and how little it takes to f*ck it all up.
