Vancouver Art Gallery presents Vancouver Special: Disorientations and Echo

The second in a series of triannual exhibitions, Disorientations and Echo provides an expansive look at contemporary art in the Greater Vancouver region featuring recent work by 32 artists.

The exhibition encompasses a variety of media, scale, and modes of presentation, with artworks that address themes of cultural resilience, the articulation of marginalized histories, and the significance of embodied knowledge. Featuring both emerging artists at an early point in their career, and more established artists whose practice spans several decades participants include Jim Adams, Afuwa with  Tonye Aganaba and Marci T House, Simranpreet Anand, Lacie Burning, Charles Campbell, Patrick Cruz, Gabi Dao with John Brennan and Elisa Ferrari, Chief Janice George and “Buddy” Willard Joseph, Simon Grefiel, Whess Harman, James Harry, and Lauren Brevner, Odera Igbokwe, Kwiigay iiwaans, Chief Floyd Joseph and Salia Joseph, Katie Kozak, Yaimel López Zaldívar, Betty Mulat and Zam Zam Warsame of NuZi Collective, Oraf, Manuel Axel Strain, Valérie d. Walker, MV Williams, Lam Wong, Marika St. Rose Yeo, and Kenneth Yuen.

Vancouver Special: Disorientations and Echo is organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by five Vancouver based curators including, Phanuel  Antwi, writer, poet, and assistant professor, University of British Columbia; Grant Arnold, Audain Curator of British Columbia Art, Vancouver Art Gallery, Jeneen Frei Njootli, artist, curator, and assistant professor, University of British Columbia, Jenn Jackson, author, and independent curator, and Christian Vistan, artist and independent curator.

The Vancouver Art Gallery has regularly organized group exhibitions representing the current activity of artists in the region since its founding. Building on this history, which began with the BC Annual exhibitions (1932–68) and continued with significant curatorial projects of recent decades, the Vancouver Special exhibitions will occur every three to five years to offer a sustained engagement with the diverse communities of contemporary artists who make Vancouver a dynamic centre of cultural production.
