Reel Causes Event Addresses Decarceration

In March, Reel Causes postponed its in-person Conviction event because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The event is now going ahead virtually, with the film screening between October 15th and 29th. Live Q&A on October 22nd with:

  • Women featured in the film: Bianca Mercer and Tanya Bignell

  • Directors: Nance Ackerman, Ariella Pahlke, Teresa MacInnes

  • Senator Kim Pate

  • Moderator: Lisa Lothian, Project Implementation Manager at community cause, EFry.

Conviction is not another ‘broken prison’ film, but rather a ‘broken society’ film.

Alarmed by the rising numbers of women in prison and inspired by long-time prisoners’ rights advocate Senator Kim Pate, Conviction flips the narrative away from pop culture's voyeuristic lens and hands it to the women who are being victimized, marginalized, and criminalized in our society.

Bianca, Treena, Laura, and Caitlin, together with Pate and others, collaborate with the filmmakers to answer a deceptively simple question: what would you have needed to avoid incarceration? Through art, photography, filmmaking and poetry, the women inside envision a more ideal world on the outside.

"We’re excited Reel Causes is screening Conviction and continuing the decarceration conversation. Having people engage in a discussion around supporting women in the community versus prison is so important,” said filmmakers Nance Ackerman, Ariella Pahlke, and Teresa MacInnes.
