SAD Mag's Guide to VanPodFest 2018!
The Vancouver Podcast Festival, presented by DOXA, is upon us! VanPodFest runs from November 8th-10th, hosting numerous free (!) and ticketed panel discussions, workshops, and live shows in celebration of the medium. The full schedule can be found here, but here are a couple events we’ve scoped out:
Panel Discussion: True Crime Broadcasting Beyond SERIAL

SERIAL is a (if not the) touchstone of the true crime podcast genre, which has since exploded in popularity. Jody Gottlieb (Somebody Somewhere), Paul Bae (The Black Tapes and The Big Loop), Mike Browne (Dark Poutine), and Josh Bloch (Uncover: Escaping NXIVM), come together to discuss the nature of true crime podcasting, exploring the advantages and disadvantages of the medium, and speculating on its future.

The folks at VanPodFest highly recommend visiting this panel if you’re considering making your own podcast, but are unsure where to start! Arif Noorani (CBC Podcasts), Mike Browne (Dark Poutine), Duncan McHugh (Duncan’s Doughnuts), and our very own Pamela Rounis (SADCast) will discuss the process of bringing your inspirations to fruition, covering how to find an audience, production logistics, and the development process.

Chris Kelly (CBC's This Is That, Panoply's Dexter Guff, CastBox's This Sounds Serious), is a talented and experienced podcast producer, and he’ll teach you production techniques he’s spent years honing. Including (but not limited to): editing music, creating soundscapes, working with actors, and other elements that contribute to the veracity of your fiction.
Podcast Live: The Allusionist

The Allusionist is a well-loved, award-winning podcast about language and and its usage. Hosted by Helen Zaltzman and with music by Martin Austwick, this event is sure to be both incredibly entertaining and educational! What a wonderful combination!
