Opening tonight at Make Gallery is Pierce Jordan's interactive light exhibition Visual Space. Visual space demonstrates the complicated role of light in the arenas of art and design—complicated in that while art can serve as an artwork, it also serves its function in lighting a space.
The show is comprised of several sculptures that interact with light in some way. A mandala-esq sculpture hangs back-lit in the centre of a wall, refined and focused. Opposite the mandala, Jordan's sound-sensitive show stopper expands to sprawl across the surface area of the wall, meeting the floor, ceiling, and encapsulating corners.
This piece is a collection of light fixtures, which Jordan designed and glue-gunned together, that responds to the volume of noise nearby. During quieter moments in the gallery, a stereo resting on the floor keeps the piece flashing, like some kind of Morse code interpretation of music echoing from the speakers.
Outside of the architectural beauty of each piece, Jordan's Visual Space also creates an atmosphere which subverts the typical gallery experience. His light sensitive piece, outside of being a great conversation starter, forces visitors to be loud to experience the full effect of the artwork. Being loud? In an art gallery? Strangers become friends while collectively shouting at art, while others frantically snap impeccable silhouette photos (see above. Amazing, right?)
Visual Space is open from February 18 to March 25th. Jordan is Make's Winter Artist in Residence, and his site-specific and rule bending exhibition is not one to miss!
